A new story begins through recovered family footage, revealing everyday life in Gaza that was never meant to be forgotten.
After completing Gaza Is Our Home, director Monear Shaer believed he had already told the most personal story he could. The first film was created independently, without studio backing or financial support—driven only by a sense of responsibility to document what was happening to his family and to Gaza.
But while traveling during the film’s tour, something unexpected surfaced.
The Recovered Family Footage Project
While going through old belongings, Monear discovered decades-old recordings from his family’s camcorder—footage that had long been believed lost.
Inside were moments of everyday life in Gaza from the early 1990s through the mid-2000s, ordinary moments that were never meant to become historical records, but now carry immense meaning.
Seeing these images again brought back the faces, voices, and memories of people and places that shaped his life. It revealed a Gaza that many around the world have never seen—one filled with warmth, family, and community.
Out of this discovery, a new project has begun to take shape.
If Gaza Is Our Home bore witness to the present, this next chapter will reach into the past—using these recovered home videos to preserve memories of what life once looked like, and to honor the people who lived it.
The first film was made with almost nothing but determination. Imagine what could be possible with the support of a wider community.
With the right backing, this next project could expand these fragile recordings into a powerful new film—one that restores lost memories, preserves family history, and shows the world a side of Gaza that deserves to be remembered.
This next chapter is only beginning. And with support, its story can grow far beyond what one person alone could achieve.
